Source of the name of continents

America :

This continent was named after the Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci. History states that this infamous navigator Vespucci reached a separate landmass in 1499. He also discovered that this atoll does not belong to Asia and it is well separated by oceans. Later in 1507, a German Scholar named Martin Waldseemuller added this vast land in the world map thus naming the new continent as The Americas, after the Latin-version of Vespucci's first name Americus. Today, America is believed to be the 'most powerful country in the world'.

Africa :
'The Afri' were the indigenous tribes who lived in this land. 'Africa' means the 'land of Afri'. Another theory is that 'Afar' refers to 'dust' in the Phoenician language and 'ica' means 'land' in Latin. So the 'land of dust' was termed as Africa.  There are 54 countries in Africa and it is the oldest populated continent.  It is the world's poorest and most underdeveloped continent. But the continent has the world's largest deposits of precious metals, gold, and platinum deposits.

Antarctica :
Antarctica is derived from the Greek word 'Antarktike' which means 'opposite to the north'. Obviously, Antarctica is situated on the southernmost tip on the Earth.  Antarctica is the 5th largest continent and mostly uninhabited as 99% of Antarctica is covered by ice. It is the driest and windiest place on Earth. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was the first human to reach the South Pole on Dec. 14, 1911.

Asia :
Asia derives its name from the Greek word 'Agia', used by Historians as early as 400 BC. It is mainly referred to as the land situated on the east of the Aegean Sea. As centuries passed by, the whole continent was known as Asia. Based on the Acadian word 'Asu' which means 'to rise' Asia meant 'the land of sunrise'. Asia is the largest continent on Earth and 60% of the world's population live in Asia. This continent is the origin of most of the ancient human civilizations.

Europe:

Europe is thought to be derived from the word 'Europa'. In ancient Greek mythology, Zeus was believed to be the God of Angels and Humans.  He was ruling the Earth from Mount Olympus in Greece.  Europa was one of the many lovers of Zeus. it is alleged that Zeus kidnapped Europa in the form of a white bull. So this continent gets its name from Goddess Europa. Europe consists of 50 countries, Vatican City being the smallest and Russia being the largest country.

Australia :
In the Latin language, 'Australis' means 'unknown land in the south'. Ancient Romans did not have knowledge on Australia's existence and they failed to discover a sea route to reach the southern land. It was first discovered by a Dutch Navigator who named the land as 'New Holland'. Later many European explorers landed here and colonies were established, naming the continent Australia. Australia is an island surrounded by more than 8000 smaller islands. It is a hub of surprises, comprising of Aborigines, immigrants, kangaroos, koalas, camels, more than 10,000 beaches, cattle stations and the longest national highway of the world.
