Types of Muscle Tissue

About half of your body’s weight is muscle. Muscle tissue is categorized into three distinct types : Skeletal, Cardiac and Smooth.

Each type of muscle tissue in the human body has a unique structure and a specific role.

1) Cardiac Muscle
Cardiac muscle are involuntary muscles found on the walls of the heart that help the heart to pump blood. They are self-contracting, autonomically regulated and must continue to contract in rhythmic fashion for the whole life of the organism.

2) Skeletal Muscle
Skeletal muscle moves bones and other structures. Human body has over 600 skeletal muscles that attach to and move bones by contracting and relaxing in response to voluntary messages from the nervous system.

3) Smooth Muscle
The smooth muscle tissue that forms organs like the stomach and bladder changes shape to facilitate bodily functions. The walls of many human organs contract and relax automatically with the help of smooth muscles
