Waste Segregation

"Keep your own house and its surroundings pure and clean.
This hygiene will keep you healthy and benefit
your worldly life.”
-Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Cleanliness is the absence of dirt, including dust, stain, bad smells and garbage. The place where we live somehow determines the kind of person we are and the kind of lifestyle we have.

Garbage everywhere :
The food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink are all polluted, thanks to our careless behaviour. We see heaps and piles of garbage lying on every street and the stink is unbearable! Even landfills are filling up and waste management is now a giant problem facing our nation.

Importance of waste segregation :
It is time for change and no government can bring this change without the support of the people. This garbage is polluting the soil, water and in turn coming back to us in a harmful way. The medical waste is causing a lot of harm, it is, in fact helping the diseases to spread. There is a tremendous amount of loss in terms of environmental degradation, health hazards and economic descend due to direct disposal of waste.

Meaning of Waste Segregation :
Waste or Garbage segregation is a process of dividing garbage into ‘reduce’, ‘reuse’ and ‘recycle’ materials.Garbage segregation can make our streets cleaner, it can help us recycle things, reduce the use of certain raw materials and hence in making our country and planet a better place to live in.

Types of waste :
One should be aware of the classification of waste, the non biodegradable and the biodegradable. Here is a chart that explains the types of waste and which section they fall under :

1) Biodegradable or Organic Wastes can be converted into biogas for industrial use and compost for gardening.

2) Recyclable waste can be crushed, broken down and remade into fresh items for further use

3) Toxic and soiled waste must be disposed of with utmost care. It is highly infectious and hazardous.

The government had already given the colours of trash cans where each type of garbage is classified into. If man persists to do his wrongful garbage disposal, pollution will continue incessantly.

Causes of improper waste segregation :
Contributing causes of improper waste management are ignorance of people about proper waste disposal, laziness in not following the correct rules and greed for not disposing the waste and trying to earn money by selling it.

Effects of improper waste disposal :
There are many disadvantages and detrimental effects if the waste is not segregated and properly disposed.

1. It affects our health
2. It affects our ground water, coastal and marine environment
3. It affects our climate
4. Causes air pollution or greenhouse effect
5. Contaminates the soil

Proper waste management can be successfully done not only by the program of the government. We can also do it inside and outside our place. If we know how to use it by the concept of waste hierarchy, fewer problems will be encountered. Stop barking at the people and do our thing first. The cleanliness and orderliness of our country is in the hands of every citizen

Remember, being cleaner and organised today means a healthier and happier tomorrow!
